Celebrating the Success of our Inaugural "Taste of Sunshine" Food Festival at Navy Pier
Our inaugural "Taste of Sunshine" food festival, held on August 14th at Navy Pier, was a spectacular celebration of Chicago's diverse culinary scene, thanks to the incredible support and participation of our Community Business Academy alumni, Sunshine staff and partners. This event was more than just a food festival—it was a vibrant showcase of the culinary talent and entrepreneurial spirit thriving in our underserved communities.
From the moment the festival opened, the energy was contagious. Attendees eagerly explored the unique flavors and stories behind each of the 16 participating food businesses. These entrepreneurs, many of whom have faced significant barriers in the industry, were given a platform to shine, and they did not disappoint. The diverse range of dishes, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Chicago, was met with enthusiasm and appreciation from all who attended.
The festival wasn’t just about food—it was a full family experience. A lively DJ kept the atmosphere upbeat, spinning tunes that had everyone moving. For the younger attendees, our face painting station was a big hit, adding a splash of color and fun to their day. And for those feeling lucky, the lollipop draw offered a chance to win a family four-pack of tickets to ride the iconic Centennial Ferris Wheel, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.
The success of "Taste of Sunshine" was made possible by the generous contributions of our sponsors and partners. We are honored that Navy Pier hosted and sponsored the event. We also received sponsorship support from Allies for Community Business - Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab. “Taste of Sunshine” was funded by the City of Chicago’s Early Stage Food Incubator program
As we reflect on the success of this inaugural festival, we are filled with gratitude for everyone who played a part in making it happen. The impact of all the support we received will be felt long after the last plate was served, as our CBA Alums with food-based businesses continue to grow and thrive in their culinary journeys.
